Actors and Writers launch a campaign for diversity quotas on TV
The Act for Change Project has been launched by performer Danny Lee Wynter and Sheffield Theatres’ artistic director Daniel Evans, to get broadcasting products to reflect the UK’s diverse population - gender, disability, black, Asian and other ethnic minorities.
The initiative was prompted by a trailer for ITV’s drama, Where Drama Lives.
A conference, held at the Young Vic in London, offered an opportunity for the industry to share ideas on how to tackle the gap of diversity on UK television.
A common idea raised at the conference regards ‘quotas’ that would force broadcasters to ensure a percentage of their output featured performers from diverse backgrounds.
The panel for the project launch also included BBC casting director Julia Crampsie and writer/director Poliakoff, both of whom spoke of the need for drama schools to do more to improve diversity in the industry.
Act for Change Project aims to improve the broadcasting code by 2016 to reflect the UK’s rich tapestry of diversity.
The campaign is supported by the Young Vic, Liberty, The Stage and Equity.
