Commemorating World AIDS Day 2017
Youmanity commemorates World AIDS Day which falls on 1 December every year. Today is dedicated to all those affected by AIDS wordwide, thus raising awareness of the devastating HIV virus, and mourning those who have died of the disease ever since it was diagnosed in the 80s.
AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide (1981-2012) with an estimated 35.3 million people living with HIV, making it one of the most devastating global health issues in recorded history. It is important to bear in mind that, despite current access to antiretroviral treatments, the AIDS epidemic claims some two million lives each year - 270,000 are children.
In the UK there are 103,700 people affected by HIV. London alone has 43% of the country's new HIV cases - unprotected sex remains the main big problem.
