Dwaynamics
Raising Champions Through Sport. Fighting knife crime & gang culture. These are the life-saving services offered by ‘Dwaynamics’.
In essence the non-profit organisation is designed to steer at-risk youths away from from gang-culture, knife crime and gun violence, and encourage them to see a more constructive future instead.
Dwaynamics reflects the life and personal ethos of Dwayne Simpson who was a few months short of his 21st birthday when he was fatally stabbed in Brixton in February 2014. Dwayne - a joyful and much loved youth - was acting as a peace-keeper, helping a younger boy being chased down the road. This act of camaraderie costed Dwayne his life.
Many young people are being stabbed daily on the streets of London - often aggressors and victims are children under 17 whom society, politicians and educational stakeholders have failed them.
Following Dwayne’s tragic demise, his mother, Lorraine Jones, vowed to look at community issues closely in an effort to prevent other families from suffering the way her loved ones had done.
One of the many activities that the young mother focused on was the re-launch of a youth boxing club: her son’s very own initiative. Prior to his death, Dwayne had started running boxing classes for children, highlighting the lack of youth-engaging activities in the area. This is how Lorraine registered ‘Dwaynamics’ as a Community Interest Company, boxing club.
From its inception the CIC attracted larger numbers of children to attend classes twice a week, free of charge. Over a few months Dwaynamics expanded the classes to offer free education and life-skill support. The skills that the children learn at boxing encourage them to engage with positive activities something outside of their school timetables.
Dwaynamics is now becoming a movement promoting education, employability and, most importantly, keep youths away from gang culture.
