Europes biggest boxing match is on!
The Box Cup is Europe’s largest international amateur boxing event. It takes place over three consecutive days at Alexandra Palace, London each June. Between 22-23-24 June 2018 five hundred male & female boxers from all over Europe will compete at London’s most prestigious venue, the Great Hall, Alexandra Palace.
Chaired by Ass. Commissioner Martin Hewitt QPM, the Box Cup is an annual event organised by Diversity and Inclusion champion, Detective Sergeant Shawn Goodchild. The Box Club, actually called Haringey Police & Community Boxing Club was set up in 1999 as part of an important Haringey Police initiative, which aimed to provide local youths with an engaging activity program. Many youths are referred to the club by Youth Offending Teams. Since its humble beginnings, the Club has gone from strength to strength with local youths becoming true success stories.
"The club enables local young people to take control of their lives, health and fitness. It also teaches them discipline they will use both on and off the ring whilst having fun at the same time. Nicola Adams is one of the youths who first joined the Club and went to become the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title. She was the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the women's flyweight division," said DS Goodchild.
A precursor to The Box Cup will be a Pan London Youth Day. On on 21st June Secondary School and College students from all of London's 32 Boroughs will descend on the Great Hall at Alexandra Palace. Youngsters will have an opportunity to learn about several different organisations from the private, public and voluntary sector. Inspirational people with a history of achievement in their chosen field of work will be at hand to provide a positive template for youths to aspire to.
Representatives from Premiership Football clubs (including Tottenham Hotspur), the world of Rugby Union (Saracens RFC Foundation) will provide young people advice on career and job opportunities within professional football, rugby and sport in general. And there will be information and recruitment stands by the Armed Forces, the Metropolitan Police and the Emergency Services - all staffed by personnel to offer more advice on career opportunities. Youmanity will also be present to advise children on the importance of social inclusion and cultural diversity.
