Human trafficking - new figures
Thailand and Qatar are among the most modern-day slavery countries: human trafficking and maltreatment of migrant workers are their offences. According to the Trafficking in Persons (TiP) by the US Department of State, Thailand was relegated to the lowest level - lower than North Korea, Iran or Saudi Arabia in the way they treat workers.
The same is for both Qatar and Malaysia. They may end in the same dog house as Thailand if they don't improve their human rights record. The TiP report is considered the benchmark index for global anti-trafficking efforts, as it ranks 188 nations according to their willingness and efforts to combat trafficking and slavery.
"There cannot be impunity for those who traffic in human beings. It must end. Slavery rips and tears at the fabric of the rule of the law,” said the US Secretary, John Kerry.
Kerry added that consumers should share the responsibility for combating the trafficking business, worth some £100bn a year.
According to the US Secretary the problem faced by 20 million people worldwide suffering slavery. “It is not a form of slavery', it is 'slavery'.”
