Immigration, Diversity and Social Cohesion
8 May 2014
There are concerns as to how immigration impacts on social cohesion. Research in America has found a negative relationship between diversity and cohesion, that is, the more diverse a community is, the more likely is to show fractures. People become less trusting of their neighbours if they are from too many different ethnicities. This relationship is not so negative in Europe.
Reasons for this negative correlation can be put down to income inequality, poverty more than ‘diversity’ itself.
