International Albinism Awareness Day
Youmanity wishes to help raise awareness of the difficulties enountered by persons affected by albinism.
People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination.
According to the United Nations, there are communities still influenced by hurtful beliefs, myths and superstition that place persons with albinism at constant risk. In parts of Africa people believe that giving birth to an Albino "creature" is a curse. Some also believe that owning a part of their body will make them rich. Albinos are hunted down and hacked to death. Or, if lucky, they will only lose an arm (sold for $225).
On 18 December 2014, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day.
The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in 2013 calling for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism.
