International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is held annually on 26 June to speak out against the crime of torture and to stand united, reminding and supporting victims and survivors of this cruel violation of human rights.
Fighting Impunity is the theme this years’ campaign. Everywhere and every day, crimes of torture are committed against men, women and children and often no one is prosecuted or punished for them. These crimes are committed with impunity.
Impunity is the failure of the state to fully investigate about violations. So, the theme aims to bring to justice in order to punish criminals.
The day was selected by the United Nations General Assembly for two reasons. First, on 26 June 1945, the UN Charter was signed. Second, on 26 June 1987 the United Nations Convention Against Torture came into result.
