Zanele Muholi's LGBTQIA+ community
"I am re-writing a black, queer and trans visual history of South Africa for the world to know of our existence, resistance and persistence," says Zanele Muholi.
Muholi is a non-binary visual activist who believes that photography should go 'deeper' to speak out against anything that happens in our society.
The South African photographeri captures moments of love and intimacy as well as intense images alluding to traumatic events – despite the equality promised by South Africa’s 1996 constitution, its LGBTQIA+ community remains a target for violence and prejudice.
Muholi's body of work forms a growing archive of a community of people who are risking their lives by living authentically in the face of oppression and discrimination.
