Black History Anyone?
What does Black Culture actually mean to contemporary society? There has been a lot of discussion around the importance of recognising black people’s contributions towards world history as well as towards the economy of many countries. In modern Britain we have Black History Month (BHM) to cherish such important history, but is the one month (October) dedicated to BHM enough to teach the new generations of the African Holocaust?
“One month a year for BHM feels like Christmas time. People get the fairy lights, tinsels out to dress a fabulous Christmas tree only to put things back into a box that will collect dust until the following year.
Black history needs to be part of school curricula - it needs to be taught in schools much in the same way other genocides are taught.“ Angelo Iudice, Chair of Youmanity
In this film project Youmanity's Ambassador Cherie Johnson asked local residents in Brixton for their views. Their comments appear to confirm that Black History needs to be part of school curricula and that an annual 'Black History Month' event is not enough to commemorate the African Holocaust.
