Rocco: the bullied boy who became a world champion
Youmanity reports on the incredible story of Rocco Skert - a young migrant who moved to Britain with his family. As with most migrants, the decision of leaving their loved ones behind was motivated by their desire to live a better life. This included the provision of a good education for their teen-age son.
Unable to speak English at first, Rocco felt excluded and soon became the victim of bullying tactics at his school, the Twickenham Academy. When Rocco’s parents reported the bullying at the school, they were told that ‘that's what children do - Rocco should learn to defend himself’.
Condoning bullying is almost as bad as committing a criminal offence, and that’s when Rocco got moved to Grey Court School. Nurtured by empathic school staff, the young man made huge improvements, integrating well in the fabric of his new environment.
What is extraordinary about this story is Rocco’s determination to succeed. And that’s exactly what he did when he took up kickboxing. He trained with such determination that he went on to become the World Junior Kickboxing Champion for Britain!
How is that for a thank you to the adoptive country who took Rocco in, Britain?
Rocco’s story id being made into an important documentary by Italian director Teresa Iaropoli. This is a truly inspirational story, one that chronicles the cornerstones of a young migrant’s success - from a defenseless, bullied teenager to becoming a real Champion.
