Sweet Melons by Kirill Golovchenk
As the harvest of melons begins, we report on the annual work carried out by workers from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia in the fields of the Ukraine
The migrants harvest and then sell the melons on road junctions on behalf of land owners.
The migrants ask: "Do you really think melons taste sweet when dust and dirt from passing cars make us cough our lungs out?
The tourists give us no rest. They swarm in their cars like bloodthirsty mosquitoes hunting down the glow of light bulbs ...
After midnight we long to fall into a light sleep, to keep watch of your melons. Now mosquitos begin to torment us. Anyway, it will soon be another morning, another day's work.”
When you buy inexpensive food, please spare a thought for the many contemporary slaves worldwide.
