The Everyday Heroine - the shortlist
Launched on Women’s International Day, the Everyday Heroine photography contest invited photographers to record the lives of ordinary women who performed extraordinary jobs around the world, to be their voice.
Over three thousand photographic submissions celebrating outstanding women from every segment of society were received from over 50 different countries.
There isn’t a winning Heroine in this photography contest - ALL are absolute winners in their own right. Single mothers, widows - young and old - doctors, cancer doctors, cancer victims, indispensable nurses and teachers. As are the many women employed in road and building construction - moving enormous weights about.
Several photographs portrayed courageous women from the Emergency Services - the Metropolitan Police - the Fire Brigades an Ambulance Service.
We also received photographs portraying survivors of natural and man-made, barbaric disasters. Victims of war, affected by psychological and physical disabilities as there are Heroines disfigured by acid attacks. Women chased out of their homes, villages, because neighbours believed they were ‘witches’. There are also victims of rape from countries where their own family shunned them. Some have fallen prey to pimps who promised to ‘look-after’ them. There are sex workers who are being cheated, tortured, trafficked and are trapped.
What all photographs show is that social inequality and gender discrimination are very much part of modern society still. Yet the same photographs also show that women are strong, brave, resourceful, caring to the extreme - true Heroines. They are the guardians of the fabric of society.
On 22nd of June a panel of judges will select the winner and runners up from a shortlist publised below. This will be a most challenging task as the quality and subject matter of these submissions is outstanding.

By sending photographs you have helped raise awareness of important human conditions some of which are still considered taboos in some parts of the world.
